Gilbert's George
Close-up on a Gilbert Stuart portrait of George Washington. Gilbert started his original of this portrait at the request of Martha Washington, but deliberately never finished it, so that he could keep it as the model from which he would repaint some 70 copies over the years. (It would also become the source of the image we see today on the US $1 bill.) This particular completed copy was given as a gift many years ago, to Washington National Cathedral.
