Orsanmichele
The tabernacle at Orsanmichele is a stunning piece of marble work and inlay. Made all the more so when you learn it dates to 1359! (The painting of the Madonna at the heart of the tabernacle is actually 13 years older!) The building around the tabernacle originally served as a marketplace and granary, but was gradually converted over to religious uses (while the business side of things moved to an upper level, added later.)
